Thanks to everyone who came out to Zentra last night! We had a blast and hope you enjoyed the tunes. As a souvenir of sorts, I’ve posted this video of Andy Farley’s set. Enjoy!

Well, this picture pretty much sums it up. Moby played at Smartbar this past Tuesday, and it was epic… really epic. Like, Oakenfold or Tiesto epic. Well, maybe not that epic. But damn, it was epic.

I was a sweaty mess after his 90-minute set of one peak-hour jam after the next. He started the night with more recent hard electro club hits (including hometown heroes Santiago & Bushido’s #1 track “Head Trick”), moved into some late 90’s hard trance I was all-too nostalgic for, then ventured into the land of pop electronica with the likes of Basement Jaxx’s “Where’s Your Head At” and a revved-up rendition of Pulp’s “Common People”, followed that with a few of his own classics, and finished things off with a track that continually sped up to epic breakdowns that never really went anywhere. And let’s not forget the requisite one-hand-in-the-air dramatic gesture in all the right places.

In the end, Smartbar was drenched in sweat, having been temporarily transformed into a mix between an old-skool rave and a UK megaclub. Moby, thanks for showin’ Chicago there is life after underground.

Check out pics from last night’s Chicago Jack Summit here.

2008.02.26

Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who called in to donate your hard-earned dollars last night! The four and a half hour Chicago Jack Summit beat its goal of raising $1000 to keep WNUR on the air for another year—all thanks to your generous support!

And, if you donated $20 or more, you can expect an mp3 recording of all four and a half hours of uninterrupted mixed house music in your e-mail inbox in the next week or so.

What’s that? You didn’t get a chance to donate, but you really want a copy of the mix? Well, never fear! The WNUR Phoneathon continues through this Thursday at 8pm. Call 847-491-WNUR to make a pledge by then, and if you pledge $20 or more, e-mail me, and I will send you the mix (after I check WNUR’s records to make sure you’re not a big liar). So call now! And be sure to tell em it’s for Streetbeat!

I also have to thank all the artists who came out last night. Despite the awful weather, everyone made it and put in their time on the decks and on the mic. Big thanks to them, and if you want to support them, check out their webpages for all their releases, events, goings on, etc.

Finally, thank you to Superfan Johnny da Dominick’s Truck Driver! He made a whopping donation for the second year in a row and deserves a very special thanks for that! Also thanks to former Streetbeat music director, Ian, who also donated a pretty penny last night. You guys are the BEST!

2008.02.12

The annual WNUR Phoneathon pledge drive starts next week, and The Fringe is getting dressed for the occasion. I’ll be teaming up with Jaims to bring you a four and a half hour clusterf*ck of our favorite houseguests from the last year. We’re calling it:

The Chicago Jack Summit
Featuring:
The Sound Republic
Santiago & Bushido
Karl Almaria
Chris Grant
and an exclusive mix from Bryan Jones

So tune in Monday, February 25 from 10pm to 2:30am for what promises to be a night of funky house music mixed by Chicago’s greatest new-school DJs.

And don’t forget to call in during the show to make your annual donation to help wnur stay on the air! With your donation, you get free stuff, too – anything from wnur t-shirts and buttons to autographed copies of limited edition vinyl releases. For more info, check out: www.wnur.org/support

and very special thanks to caitlin, who designed the awesome flier!

2008.02.08

Just a quick reminder that the hip-hop showcase Winter Heat sponsored by WNUR and Gravel Records is TONIGHT! The show runs from 8 til around midnight, so you can still hit up Diplo at Smartbar after the show! Check out the events section for more details.

Oh, and I’ll be there, so…

2008.01.31

well, it’s the last day of january, and i’m all caught up on posting mixes.

roshan was nice enough to re-master the recording of his mix as my special guest on last week’s edition of the fringe. it’s available now as two mp3s in the mixes section.

i also posted this week’s show which brings the total number of mixes now on the site to 30! that’s about 45 hours of house music. consider it an early flag day present.

2008.01.18

His sunglasses are famous. But is he for real?

2008.01.17

chicago producer and dj roshan (funkfield, clean house) is guest spinning on next monday’s edition of the fringe!

tune in on monday to hear all the special guest goodness from 10 to 11:30pm (cst). listen in chicago over 89.3fm, or around the world at www.wnur.org.

2008.01.17

If you like underground hip-hop half as much as you like chicago house, then do yourself a favor and check out winter heat. it’s going to be a night of raw hip-hop words and beats featuring headliner akrobatik. this show is sponsored by wnur and is hosted by my fellow streetbeat djs deluge and d-long.

check it out at the abbey pub in chicago on friday, feb. 8. for more info, visit: www.wnur.org/winterheat/

flava flav says “be there! yea boyeeeee!”

2008.01.07

sorry for the late notice, but wnur streetbeat has been officially moved back a half hour. This means that the fringe will now run from 10pm to 11:30pm (cst). Catch the first edition of the fringe in four weeks tonight on 89.3 wnur-fm in the chicago area and around the world at wnur.org.

2007.12.06

hey jackers, a recording of this week’s edition of the fringe is now available in the mixes section. and if you happen to be the guy who called in wondering what track was playing and i said i forgot, it was “muddy feet” by The Sound Diggers and Andrew Macari. it was the last track i played, so it didn’t make it onto the 80 min. cd-r i used to record the show. thus for tracklist purposes, it doesn’t exist except to you.

if you are not that guy, i apologize for wasting five minutes of your time while you try and decipher those last few sentences.

in other news, that’s it for the fringe in 2007! tim rooney (aka applique) will be taking over next monday to bring you a 3-hour set of jackin house from 9:30pm until 12:30am. on the 17th, rocky jones will be spinning some progressive house, and i have no idea who will take on the christmas eve and new year’s eve shows. but according to my producer, we have to fill that time with someone… which brings me to my last point. are you fcc certified, proficient at spinning house music, and capable of operating radio transmitter equipment? oh, and you don’t have plans on christmas eve or new year’s eve?? the job is yours. congratulations (i guess).

happy holidays!
sangre

2007.11.26

you know how sometimes the best part about thanksgiving is coming up with creative ways to use all that leftover turkey? well, tonight’s edition of the fringe is kinda like that. i’m going to take some of the best tracks i’ve played over the past few months and whip up some tasty house music casserole. so no new music tonight, but i guarantee you’re gonna like what i do with the leftovers. tune in for a taste.

also look out for the mp3 of last week’s show featuring james amato and santiago. it should be up sometime tonight.

2007.11.16

this just in:

james amato (neighborhood house watch, potty mouth music, smartbar) and santiago (potty mouth music, om, zentra) will be guest-starring on this coming monday’s edition of the fringe on wnur. santiago stopped by this summer and melted some faces with his house music jack-a-thon. meanwhile, james is new to the show but has been breeding his own brand of soul-destroying house at smartbar every month.

so tune in to see what happens when these forces unite this coming monday, november 19 from 9:30 to 11 pm (CST) on 89.3fm in chicago or online at wnur.org.

2007.11.09

yo! i finally posted the mix from two weeks ago. life has been a bit crazy lately, but never fear: things are back on ‘jack’ now. hee hee…

also thanks to the folks who came to zentra last friday. good times were had by all.
